The origin of corn lies in Central America between Peru and Mexico. The development of today’s cultivated maize, which cannot reproduce without human help, is considered one of the greatest domestication achievements of mankind. Over the last 4,000 – 5,000 years, an inconspicuous wild grass has been developed into many different forms through the selection of desired characteristics. Today there are around 5,000 different varieties of maize.
Corn is one of the world’s most important crops. In developing countries, corn is the staple food. In industrialized countries, on the other hand, corn is mainly used as livestock feed. This crop is particularly good at satisfying hunger, as it contains more energy and carbohydrates in one portion than any other food.
Corn is on our table almost every day, but it is not recognizable in most cases. The case is clear for cornflakes and popcorn, but not for many other foods. Corn starch is a binding agent for ready-made soups and sauces and is found in yogurt, desserts, and ice cream. Sugar made from corn is listed as glucose syrup, maltose, or fructose.
At Tobien Trading, we offer high-quality corn from organic and conventional cultivation.
